Most Nature readers use ChatGPT for fun
Almost 60% of around 500 people who respond to a Nature survey use artificial-intelligence tools for creative fun not related to reseach Brainstorming was the most common science-related use, cited by almost 30 % respondents.
Many people highlited how chatbots could speed up toutine taskes, such as crunching numbers debugging code or streamlining writing. At the same time, respondents were worried about the pitfalls, such as factual inaccuracies or the possibility that these programes could help paper mills to commit research fraud on a large scale
Electrodes self-build in living fish
Researchers have created a gel that transforms into a substance capable of conducting electricity when injected into living zebrafish. The gel uses common chemicals in the body, glucose and lactate, to polymerize into a solid yet flexible material. There is currentlyno no way to connect the electrodes to an outside electrical source and make them functional. However, the discovery could lead to the creation of electronic devices that can be implanted into the body without causing harm, improve technologies for deep-brain stimulation or help damaged nerves to regrow. Food versus friends
A study in mice has revealed a surprising link between the appetite-suppresing hormone leptin and social behaviour. In male rodents, leptin suppressed feeding, as expected, but also promoted interactions with female mice. Leptin is normally produced when an animal`s energy needs have been met, so the hormone could tell the brain that it`s time to prioritize other activities - such as sex. The research could hint at whydisordered eating in people sometimes goes hand-in-hand with social difficulties. (202303)
